Kids donate hair for cancer

On Thursday, May 19 at 9 a.m., 12 girls at Forest Heights School, 10304 - 81 Street, will have their long tresses cut off and donated to create wigs for people who have lost their hair fighting cancer. The original idea was put forward at the beginning of the school year to the principal by a young Grade 2 student. She challenged other students in the school to grow their hair and then have it cut off to donate. Thirteen girls volunteered, with one girl cutting her hair to donate on Valentines Day.

On Thursday, each girl will have a stylist to do the task and students will be making a donation that day to be allowed to wear hats that. The school has also raised money for cancer research through their participation in the Run for a Cure relay.

For hair to be accepted for the wig program, it must be 10 inches long. It takes approximately 8 donations of unprocessed hair to craft a single hand-sewn wig for a child.

The girls' contribution will be celebrated by a choir of boys from the school serenading the young ladies.
