What: | Ghanaian Teachers Visit Edmonton Schools on a Trip of a LifetimeTwo teachers from the rural Ghanaian community of Atwima Apemanim are visiting Edmonton on a unique trip in order to learn more about our education system and to share their knowledge about learning and teaching strategies. The teachers, who are also twin sisters, will be visiting several district schools while in Edmonton, attending seminars at the U of A and learning about local history and the Albertan context of teaching from Faculty of Education students. The teachers' visit comes after Georgia Davies, a teacher at Abbott School, visited Ghana last year as part of the University of Alberta's EDFX 490: Global Citizenship Field Experience in Ghana course. This course provides students with international experiences and perspectives to influence and enrich their teaching practice. A fourth-year Education student at the time, Georgia was so inspired by her experience in Ghana that she, along with the help of her family, organized a fundraiser to contribute to the program. The $6,000 they raised has helped offset the costs associated with bringing the two Ghanaian teachers to the U of A for the first time since the program began in 2007. |
