Earth Day 2011: Stewardship Begins With Me

When the staff and students at Hillview School think about the environment, they know the responsibility for its care begins with them. On Thursday, April 21, Hillview School is hosting a day long Earth Day Fair to showcase their environmental knowledge.

In May 2010, Hillview School received a $10,000 A+ for Energy education grant for teacher Herman Chang's innovative project proposal - Earth Day 2011: Stewardship Begins with Me. The goal of the project was to provide Kindergarten to Grade 6 students learning opportunities for how they can care for the world through research projects based on energy conservation, energy efficiency, alternative technologies, solar power, biomass energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, wind power and hydropower. The projects began in September and will be presented at the event.

Over the last year, students have also been engaged through a variety of learning opportunities including classroom lessons and activities, guest speakers, field trips, movies and web quests.

Students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 have created projects which will be on display. They will be able to explain, present and answer any questions visitors may have regarding their environmental work.
