On Thursday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Minchau School, 3615 - Mill Woods Road East, is hosting The Leader in Me conference. The school has successfully embedded into the school culture the principles and practices of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen F. Covey's bestseller on personal effectiveness. The 7 Habits - Be Proactive; Begin with the End in Mind; Put First Things First; Think Win/Win; Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood; Synergize; and Sharpen the Saw - are all part of the instructional practice and curriculum at the school and serve as the basis of a vibrant character education approach.
Every student at Minchau School exhibits the confidence and skills it takes to be a leader. In addition to serving as greeters, presenters and tour guides for guests attending the conference, a group of students has been chosen to serve as spokespeople for media.
The official opening ceremony begins at 9 a.m. Special guests include Col. Donald Ethell, the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta; Angus Watt, Chair, Alberta Order of Excellence Council; Vice-Chair Sarah Hoffman and Trustee Leslie Cleary, Edmonton Public School Board; and keynote speaker David George, principal of the first Lighthouse School in Canada, who will talk about how the program transformed his elementary school in Medicine Hat.
Staff and students at the school have been working very hard at developing the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People through The Leader in Me process over the last year and half. In fact, the school was recently granted The Leader in Me Lighthouse School status by the FranklinCovey organization, making it one of only 14 schools in the entire world to receive this honour.
Media are invited to attend the conference and observe first hand the leadership qualities Minchau students have developed as they forge their way toward becoming our future leaders.
