Victoria School of the Arts is thrilled to raise the curtain on a backstage murder mystery that is sure to entertain. Curtains by John Kander and Fred Ebb of Chicago and Cabaret fame, is a parody of the classic "whodunit" - where a lone detective, Lieutenant Frank Cioffi, investigates a series of murders that take place behind the scenes of a Broadway-bound production.
"When a number of our students and staff returned from having seen the original production in New York in 2008, we knew it had to be on our list," says director Greg Dowler-Coltman. "Everyone's enthusiasm for this fast paced, comedic gem written by Broadway legends was incredible!"
The production invites student performers to embrace the style and commit to it fully in their singing, dancing and acting. "Working on a play at Vic engages us physically and mentally," says Cynthia Hicks, who plays the role of up and coming performer Bambi Bernet. "It is expected that we will approach every aspect of the work like a pro."
Showtime is 7 p.m. at Victoria School's Eva O. Howard Theatre (corner of 101 Street and Kingsway Avenue). Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Regular performances run nightly March 16, 17 and 19.
In addition, the Victoria School Foundation for the Arts is hosting its annual fundraising gala performance on Friday, March 18. Tickets are $85 and the funds raised will go towards supporting the Foundation's master class series and scholarships program.
