Helping Hearts at École Rio Terrace School

The École Rio Terrace School community has a lot to be proud of. Students are currently involved in projects that will make a difference in children's lives, both locally and internationally.

One of the projects students are involved in is fundraising for Haiti. This is after learning that in Haiti, "If you want to earn $5 per day, you pick up a sledgehammer, break up bigger pieces of concrete into smaller pieces of concrete, load them by hand onto the back of a regular pick up truck and then repeat."(Source: Children Helping Children Through the Visual Arts).

To raise funds, students are making clay hearts to sell for $5 each, with the goal of raising $2,500. To date, the children have raised $1,100. The students are making the hearts on their own time, during recess and lunch and are even taking orders. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Art Creation Foundation for Children in Jacmel, Haiti. The hearts will continue to be on sale throughout the month of February and everyone is welcome to come and donate to this cause. Media are invited to see the clay hearts being made on Monday, February 14 at 10 a.m. at the school (7608 - 154 Street).

Last year, the students in Denise Pridmore's class started to talk about how they could help the less fortunate living in different parts of the world. After the earthquake in Haiti, the students looked into collecting shoes for the Haitian people. Although there were some challenges early on, the students were persistent, and with the help of parents, the shoe collection idea became a local project and almost 100 pairs of shoes were collected for the Salvation Army.

The gift of giving continued closer to home as the students have collected and donated new or gently used books for the Clareview Headstart program. The Headstart program was in need of books for children aged 3 to 7 to be used for their home reading program. The students have been successful in donating 324 books to the program.
