On Thursday, December 2, from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m., U School will be officially launched at the University of Alberta. Chancellor Linda Hughes will be on hand to represent the University and Senate.
A Grade 5/6 class from Sherwood School will take part in two activities tomorrow - building a dry ice comet (an exciting demo that displays the concept of how comets are formed); and liquid nitrogen demos that explain and demonstrate the different precautions that engineers need to consider when designing equipment for space travel. The U School classroom space is at 105 Triffo Hall. A campus map is available here.
U School, short for University School, is an exciting initiative of the U of A Senate. Elementary students, many of whom are from high needs schools or rarely travel outside their own neighborhoods in the city, will have an opportunity to spend a full week exploring the learning and discovery opportunities at the University of Alberta.
Students taking part in U School are excited to be on campus and are hopefully able to envision themselves there in the future. One student wrote in his journal "I thought the U of A was going to be so boring, but when we got here it was fun, awesome and cool".
The project exposes children, their families, teachers and communities to future possibilities and brighter futures.
