Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be Deaf? Not to be able to hear music, the sounds of traffic or someone's voice? On Saturday, November 27 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., the gym at the Alberta School for the Deaf will be transformed into a mini city complete with a bank, restaurant, grocery store and jail. It is all designed to simulate a day in the life of a Deaf person going through their everyday activities. Deaf Deaf World is a celebration of the visual world and American Sign Language (ASL), and is an initiative to educate the hearing community about Deaf culture.
Deaf Deaf World will simulate for a hearing person the life experience through the eyes of a Deaf person. Participants will go from venue to venue, using ASL as their only way to communicate. The penalty for using your voice means spending some time in the Deaf jail.
Through Deaf Deaf World participants will hopefully gain an appreciation and knowledge of Deaf culture. They will also get the chance to meet community leaders, Deaf organizations and educational institutions that teach American Sign Language and Deaf culture.
