Edmonton Public Schools to recognize top students

The Board of Trustees and Administration of Edmonton Public Schools will recognize 92 exceptional students at its annual District Student Awards night celebration on Thursday, October 14 at 7 p.m., in Eva O. The District will honour Grades 10, 11 and 12 students for their academic and artistic achievements, entrepreneurial skills and demonstrations of leadership and citizenship during the 2009-2010 school year.

For this past year, two students share the Grade 12 Highest Honours Standing, Katherine Brown from McNally School and Finola Hackett from Strathcona School. Both achieved averages of 98.8 per cent on the qualifying subjects. Katherine is currently attending the University of Alberta in the Facility of Arts and Finola is at McGill University majoring in Environment and minoring in Political Science.

Katherine was a Full Diploma student in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program in which she achieved the highest overall mark total in the district - 43 out of 45 marks. She achieved marks of 100 per cent in Physics 30, French 31, Mathematics 31; 99 per cent in Social Studies 30-1; and 95 per cent in English 30-1. In addition, Finola was very involved in volunteering at Strathcona with the service club, Scona Pride, Eco club, Awards Board and yearbook committee. She was the graduating class valedictorian and was also runner up in the 2006 Scripps Spelling Bee championship.

"We know that many teachers have worked with these students along the way, devoting endless amounts of time and energy instructing and inspiring them to do their best. By recognizing these outstanding students, teachers see the result of their dedication to their profession," said Board Chair Don Fleming.
