Building bright futures:

Edmonton Public Schools releases student achievement results

At a media conference this morning, Board Chair Don Fleming announced the District's student achievement results for the 2009-2010 school year.

"The Board of Trustees has made it clear to the Superintendent of Schools that our primary objective remains the same: every one of our students will complete high school," said Fleming. "Improving student achievement is a key focus of the Board's strategic plan and our staff are committed to turning that vision into a reality."

Edmonton Public Schools continues to see growth in its high school completion rate, which was previously released by Alberta Education. From 2004-2005 to 2008-2009, the District saw a 4.7 per cent increase in its five-year high school completion rate, rising to 74.4 per cent from 69.7 per cent.

When comparing district results to the Province, district students did very well at achieving the acceptable standard and the standard of excellence on provincial achievement tests. Particularly positive were the results for Grades 6 and 9.

On the diploma exams, district students had positive results in science-based subjects and French language arts, while math, social studies and English demonstrated room for improvement.

"We continue to partner with families, community organizations and students themselves to improve our achievement results," said Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent. "We are working together to meet students' individual needs and to help each learner realize the brightest possible future."
