The official opening of A. Blair McPherson School will take place on Thursday, September 23 at 7 p.m. (430 Tamarack Green NW). Attending the ceremony will be Don Fleming, Board Chair; Catherine Ripley, Board Vice-Chair; Bev Esslinger, Sue Huff, Gerry Gibeault and George Rice, Trustees from the Edmonton Public School Board; Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Health and Wellness and Deputy Government House Leader; Amarjeet Sohi, City Councillor; and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools. The one hour program will conclude with an official ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments and tours of the school.
"As champions of public education, the Board of Trustees firmly believe that a school should serve the needs of the community and that schools should be accessible to students no matter where they live," says Chair Fleming.
A. Blair McPherson is an ASAP school - owned, administered and operated by Edmonton Public Schools. The school has been built to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification, an independent rating system used to measure environmental efficiency. LEED Silver buildings are more energy efficient, cost less to operate, and provide a healthier work environment through improved air quality and use of natural light.
The school is named after A. Blair McPherson, or Grampa Mac, as he was affectionately called, a beloved family pastor and respected counsellor. Through his work, both as an advocate for public education and as a dedicated school volunteer, Grampa Mac made a significant contribution to the tradition of excellence at Edmonton Public Schools.
