The official opening of Florence Hallock School will take place on Thursday, September 9 at 7 p.m. (16437 - 87 Street NW). Attending the ceremony will be Don Fleming, Board Chair; Vice-Chair Catherine Ripley; Trustees Bev Esslinger and George Rice from the Edmonton Public School Board; Janice Sarich, Parliamentary Assistant for Education and MLA for Edmonton-Decore; Ron Hayter, City Councillor; and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools. The one hour ceremony will conclude with an official ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments and tours of the school.
“As champions of public education, the Board of Trustees firmly believe that a school should serve the needs of the community and that schools should be accessible to students no matter where they live,” says Chair Fleming.
Florence Hallock is an ASAP school - owned, administered and operated by Edmonton Public Schools. The school has been built to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification, an independent rating system used to measure environmental efficiency. LEED Silver buildings are more energy-efficient, cost less to operate, and provide a healthier work environment through improved air quality and use of natural light.
The school is named after Florence Hallock (1886 – 1938), who taught from 1916 to 1937 and was an accomplished and admired pioneer educator. She was a leading authority in domestic sciences, and no history of Home Economics development in Alberta would be complete without special mention of her.
