The doors have opened at six new state of the art K-9 schools, bringing the total number of Edmonton Public Schools to 197. The schools will serve students in high-growth neighbourhoods across the city and will provide space for more than 5,000 students. The new schools are part of the Government of Alberta's innovative Alberta Schools Alternative Procurement (ASAP) Phase I project. This project has addressed the need for new schools in rapidly growing areas of the city.
"The new schools are part of our Board's ongoing commitment to provide outstanding learning opportunities for district students," says Board Chair Don Fleming. "These facilities offer state of the art classrooms, laboratories and computer systems and will help prepare our students for success in the 21st century."
The new schools use a standard core school design, including a common core of administration offices, library and gymnasium, which includes high-performance modular classrooms that can be added or removed to meet fluctuations in student enrolment.
The schools are owned and operated by the Edmonton Public School Board, and will operate like existing district schools. Media are invited to attend all official openings.
