DISTRICT STUDENTS BRING HOME THE MEDALS

Jasper Place School and the Skill Centre both medaled in the 3rd annual Edmonton High School Culinary Challenge. The Jasper Place School team, made up of students Tim Whistance-Smith, Jaycee Ward and Neesa Loewen, were awarded the Gold medal. They were led by teacher Len Hallowes. The Skill Centre students, Kayla Giang, Lucas Clarke and Ben Stale, received the Bronze medal. Their teacher is Jaryd Murray.

Thirteen culinary teams from high schools in and around Edmonton took part in the culinary challenge held in the kitchens at NAIT in February. Each team of three students (professionally attired in white chef jackets and hats) were given three hours to prepare a six serving, three-course meal.

The meal they were asked to create was a corn chowder soup; an entrée of Beef Rouladen, braised red cabbage, steamed green beans and bread dumplings; and a chocolate mousse for dessert. The time limit for the preparation, plating and presentation to judges was three hours.

The Edmonton High School Culinary Challenge was launched by the Canadian Culinary Foundation's (CCF) Edmonton Branch to introduce high school students to the possibilities of a career in the culinary arts.
