Good Things Are Happening
STRATHCONA HIGH SCHOOL 'PLAYS IT FORWARD'!

Strathcona High School 'Plays it Forward'!On December 18, Strathcona High School wrapped up its annual global initiative by raising $54,329 for the organization Right to Play. The Leadership 35 class organized the 'Play it Forward' campaign to support Right to Play's focus on helping children in developing countries.

The major fundraiser, 'Play-On Scona', was held on December 12, 2009. Students raised a minimum of $100 to attend the event which included the following activities: a Much Music Video Dance, Hypnotist Show by Wayne Lee, Gladiator Challenge, Paintball, Mixed Martial Arts, and Hallway Human Curling on office chairs. Money was also raised through raffle tickets for a signed Oilers Jersey, Mush Cup (human dog sledding race) and staff versus student basketball and hockey games.

Right to Play uses sport and play programs to improve education, health, conflict resolution and community development in 23 developing countries worldwide. The success of this campaign has enabled the school to sponsor play for approximately 1,000 impoverished children around the world.

Last year Strathcona High School raised $27,000 for a school in Bumala, Kenya. The school's Leadership Program will now focus on local community initiatives before gearing up for another global project in the fall of 2010.
