Good Things Are Happening
MILL WOODS SCHOOLS JOIN TO EXPLORE THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY CHALLENGES OF THEIR STUDENTS

On Monday, October 5, all public elementary school in Mill Woods will be participating in a unique professional development day. Twenty-two schools and over 350 staff members will come together at the Fantasyland Hotel Conference Centre to broaden their understanding of the diversity of students and families who they serve. The day begins at 8:15 a.m. with a variety of multi-cultural entertainment. This is followed at 9 a.m. with the keynote speaker Dr. Randall Lindsay, from the California Lutheran University. Dr. Lindsay has worked extensively with school districts as they plan for an experience changing populations.

Beginning at 1 p.m., participants will attend sessions of their choice including topics such as growing up in two cultures; cultural stigmas around discipline; the Muslim faith; the Somalian, Sengali and Aboriginal cultures; the role of women from other cultures and poverty. Two sessions are about family violence and issues specific to the Mill Woods community.

The afternoon presenters consist of community partners and representatives from the Edmonton Mennonite Centre, Catholic Social Services, Centre for Family Literacy, the English Language Support Services Centre, the U of A, the Edmonton Police Service and the Islamic Family and Social Services Association.
