Future bright for district students:

Edmonton Public Schools releases student achievement results

At a media conference this morning, Board Chair Don Fleming announced the District's student achievement results for the 2008-2009 school year.

"The Board of Trustees has made it a priority for our school district to improve student achievement," said Fleming. "As part of our Board's strategic plan, we are committed to ensuring each and every student in our schools is successful."

One ongoing area of improvement for the District is found in the high school completion data, which was previously released by Alberta Education. Since the Province began reporting five-year high school completion rates in 1999-2000, the District's high school completion rate has increased 10.3 per cent, rising to 74.5 per cent. "Our high school completion rate has grown consistently over the past decade, which speaks to the hard work of our staff and the admirable efforts of our students," said Fleming.

When comparing district results to the Province and to the District's own results from last year, district students continue to do well at achieving the standard of excellence on provincial achievement tests and diploma exams. The District also saw gains in the percentage of students achieving the acceptable standard on the Grades 3, 6 and 9 provincial achievement tests. The District remains committed to helping more students achieve the acceptable standard on their diploma exams.

"Our students are from increasingly diverse backgrounds, and we must anticipate and respond to their diverse and changing needs if we are to see ongoing improvements in student learning," said Fleming. "The Board of Trustees and district staff will continue working with parents, partners and community members to build the brightest possible future for each of our students."

Complete achievement result reports were distributed during the media conference. For more information on the results, check out the charts or view the detailed results.
