Good Things Are Happening

TRADITION AND EDUCATION COME TOGETHER ON AWASIS DAY

On Friday, June 19, from 12:30 - 3:15 p.m., students, families, friends and staff of Prince Charles School (12325 - 127 Street) will celebrate Awasis Day under the Alberta sun and sky.

Awasis Day is the culminating event of the hard work students, parents and staff have done throughout the year. The mini pow wow will feature traditional dancing and singing performances by the Awasisak Nikamowak Choir, the Prince Charles Guitar and Fiddle Group and the Prince Charles Jiggers. In addition, the Grade 6 graduating class will be recognized for completing their elementary school journey.

Dignitaries in attendance will include Doug Elniski, MLA Edmonton Calder, Sue Huff, Edmonton Public School Board Trustee and Ron MacNeil, Assistant Superintendent.

Please join us as we celebrate the colours, sights and sounds of the Aboriginal culture.

The Awasis Program (K-6) offered at Prince Charles School adopts a holistic approach to teaching its students. It creates a sense of pride and community within a school through a daily exploration of Aboriginal cultural elements and spirituality. Students have many opportunities to increase their knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal culture though Cree language instruction, traditional teaching, music drumming and traditional and Métis dancing. Community Elders are also part of the program and provide guidance, offer cultural teachings and support the success of students in school.
