Good Things Are Happening
EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS' HOSTS SCHOOL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM
On Monday, October 27, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Edmonton Public Schools is proud to host a Comprehensive School Health Symposium at Barnett House, 11010 - 142 Street. Creating a learning environment that promotes health and well-being for all students and staff is a priority for our schools. It is increasingly evident that good nutrition and an active lifestyle contribute to student success and achievement. Planning for health and wellness is a collaborative process that involves networking among many different stakeholders in schools and across the community.
This full-day symposium features keynotes by Caroline Whitby and Heather Morse, educators from the Annapolis Valley Health Promoting School Program (AVHPSP) in Nova Scotia. The AVHPSP has grown from a grassroots initiative in 1997 to a recognized provincial program in which almost all schools participate. The intent of the program is to make it easier for students to make physical activity and healthy eating choices a way to prevent chronic diseases.
Other breakout sessions include local, provincial and national community groups such as, Alberta Milk, AADAC, Be Fit for Life, U of A School of Public Health, Edmonton Catholic Schools and Capital Health.
The health symposium is the result of a Board of Trustees recommendation to plan for a one-day comprehensive school health symposium, in the context of the District's overall health initiative be implemented. A second symposium will be held in March.
Additional information on the symposium is available at here.
