DISTRICT STUDENTS PREPARING FOR BRIGHT FUTURES:
Edmonton Public Schools releases student achievement results
At a media conference this morning, Ms. Jenise Bidulock, Assistant Superintendent of Schools, announced the District's student achievement results for the 2007-2008 school year.
"To address the Board of Trustees' priority around student achievement, the District has focused on supporting the work of teaching and learning taking place in classrooms," said Bidulock. "The work we have been doing in terms of staff development, differentiated instruction and intervention strategies for students is a vital part of that effort."
One area of substantial improvement for the District is found in the high school completion data, which was previously released by Alberta Education. Since the Province began reporting five-year high school completion rates in 1999-2000, the District's high school completion rate has increased 10.1 per cent, rising to 74.3 per cent. "Our completion rate is not yet where we want it to be, but we are making progress and more of our students are completing high school," said Bidulock.
When comparing district results to the Province and to the District's own results from last year, district students continue to do well at achieving the standard of excellence. The Accountability Pillar outcomes show a decline in the District's results at the standard of excellence over time and the District is monitoring the results to determine if this is a trend. The District remains committed to helping more students achieve the acceptable standard.
"While our achievement results at the acceptable standard have not dramatically increased or decreased over the past few years, we know we need to be increasingly responsive to the diverse and changing needs of our students if we are to improve student learning," said Bidulock. "Edmonton Public Schools will continue working with parents, partners and community members to help our students move towards the brightest possible futures."
