Old Scona Academic School celebrates 100th birthday
Receives designation as provincial historic resource

In a ribbon cutting ceremony to be held on Friday, September 26 at 1:00 p.m., Old Scona Academic High School will receive designation as a provincial historic resource - an honour that marks the significance of its centennial anniversary. The event will commemorate the school's rich history and a century-long commitment to providing students with a first-class education.

"Over the past 100 years, Old Scona has been enriching the educational experiences of generations of students - helping to foster their potential and willingness to succeed" says Bev Esslinger, Board Chair. "We are incredibly proud to have this school recognized as an historic site. For ten decades it has linked us to the early beginnings of public education in our city, and is an important part of the heritage of the Strathcona community."

Dignitaries in attendance will include the Honourable Norman L. Kwong, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta; Rahim Jaffer, MP Edmonton Strathcona; Dave Hancock, Minister of Education; Don Fleming, Trustee, Edmonton Public School Board; and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools.

The occasion will also bring together Old Scona alumni. A special appearance is planned by Mr. Bill Kent, who was a member of the graduating class of 1924. The Honourable Lois Hole, former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, Clarence Campbell, former president of the National Hockey League and Bob Stollery, former PCL president and renowned philanthropist are among other notable alumni of the school.

"Historic places give us a window into ourselves, where we have been, where we are now and where we could be going," said Lindsay Blackett, Minister of Culture and Community Spirit. "The provincial historic designation of Old Scona Academic School is an important recognition of the historic value this facility has in Edmonton and Alberta, as it has been a place of early learning for many community leaders who have gone on to benefit our province in a variety of ways."

A full schedule of events are planned for guests to enjoy throughout the day. They will be able to reminisce with old friends and family while visiting classrooms and watching video presentations that chronicle the last 100 years of Old Scona's historical past.
