Good Things Are Happening
SOCCER SUPERSTARS PROGRAM LAUNCHES FOR CITY CENTRE STUDENTS
On Thursday, June 5, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., 32 children from Montrose School and Ben Calf Robe will begin to learn the game of soccer from some young volunteers who believe in giving back to their community. Soccer Superstars is based on the successful Hockey Education Reaching Out Society (HEROS) program. This past winter, students from three city centre schools learned teamwork, skating skills and the game of hockey.
Three U of A students, who served as on-ice mentors in the HEROS hockey program, came up with the idea of Soccer Superstars as a way to involve more children in organized sports. They, along with Big Brothers and Sisters, are providing this opportunity for youth who might never have the chance to play the game of soccer.
The sessions take place in the Montrose School field, 11931 - 62 Street, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday until July 17.
The students will all receive their own sports bags and soccer equipment including cleats, balls, and jerseys with the students' names on them. The equipment has been donated through Canadian Tire JumpStart, a community-based charitable program that helps youth in financial need participate in organized sport.
