FIVE DISTRICT TEACHERS RECOGNIZED WITH PRIME MINISTER'S AWARDS FOR TEACHING EXCELLENCE

Edmonton Public Schools is pleased to announce that five district teachers have been honoured with 2008 Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence. The awards recognize the efforts of outstanding teachers in all disciplines throughout Canada who have developed innovative ways to teach. Prime Minister Harper announced the awards in Ottawa today.

Receiving Certificates of Achievement are: Ailwin Boulet, Highlands School; Trish Fermaniuk, Tevie Miller Heritage School Program; Alison Hancox, Argyll Centre; Jodi O'Laney, Menisa School; and Leanne Topma, Dovercourt School.

"It is certainly gratifying to have these district teachers honoured with this award," says Superintendent Edgar Schmidt. "They serve as outstanding ambassadors of the teaching profession."

The Awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence (national) and Certificate of Achievement (regional) levels, carry cash prizes of $5000 and $1000 respectively. Financial awards are issued to the recipient's school to be spent under their direction. Certificates of Excellence are awarded to the 15 top-ranked nominees, with the next 50 top-ranked nominees each receiving a Certificate of Achievement.
