Good Things Are Happening
WESTGLEN STUDENTS AND STAFF CELEBRATE EARTH III SCHOOL STATUS

On Friday, April 25 at 10 a.m., Westglen School students and staff will celebrate their new status as an Earth III School for completing 3,000 environmental projects. The school becomes the first school in Alberta to receive this designation and only the third school in all of Canada. Westglen School has been involved in environmental projects since they joined the SEEDS program in August 1999.

The celebration will begin with the students entering the gym wear green and blue clothes and EARTH III ribbons. Special guests include MLA Diana McQueen, representatives from the SEEDS Foundation and musician Peter Puffin.

Teacher Linda Hut acts as the schools Environment Coordinator and oversees all the environmental projects. A group of 12, Grade 6 students team up as the Earth Patrollers and help promote and organize environmental activities based on monthly themes.

The variety of projects undertaken by the staff and students consist of both individual home and classroom initiatives. These include recycling and changing light bulbs, using old papers for scratch pads, turning off the lights while out of the classroom and painting yellow fish by city storm drains. They also organized a Reuse Fair, where 200 people from around the City donated junk for recycling. And to top it off, they have a worm composter for lunch scraps.

The SEEDS Foundation has been providing balanced, curriculum-fit energy and environmental education programs for the past 32 years. These programs have educated, inspired realistic choices and stimulated action by millions of students and their families on relevant energy and environmental issues across Canada.
