Good Things Are Happening
MAYOR MANDEL CREATES ART WITH QUEEN ALEXANDRA SCHOOL STUDENTS
On October 19 at 9 a.m., Mayor Stephen Mandel, Trustee Don Fleming and a classroom of Grade 4 students will be using tiles as their canvas to create a piece of art which will be used for the school's mural mosaic project. The tiles, including those painted by Mayor Mandel, Trustee Fleming, staff and parents, will be assembled and unveiled as a 8 foot by 14 foot mural mosaic entitled What Inspires a Child.
For the past week, artist Lewis Lavoie has been spending time with each class at the school, guiding students in their creation of a piece of art which will become part of the huge mural. The finished piece will be permanently displayed on the third floor.
For the last few years, Queen Alexandra has been a recipient of the Alberta Foundation for the Art's Artist in Residence grant, a matching grant provided through the Alberta Government, which allows artists to explore their medium with students. This project has been made possible by the Queen Alexandra Parent Association, who applied for the grant.
Samples of Lewis Lavoie's previous art projects are available at www.muralmosaic.com.
