EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS RECOGNIZES TOP HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

The Edmonton Public School Board will recognize 91 exceptional students at the District's annual Student Awards Night celebration tonight at 7 p.m. in Eva O. Howard Theatre, Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts, corner of Kingsway Avenue and 101 Street. Grades 10, 11 and 12 students will be recognized and honoured for their academic, athletic and artistic achievements, entrepreneurial skills and demonstrations of leadership and citizenship for the 2006-2007 school year.

This year's recipient of the Grade 12 Highest Honours standing is Alexander Baer from Harry Ainlay School. Alexander achieved final marks of 100 per cent in four courses: Pure Math 30, Social Studies 30, Mathematics 31 and German 30. He also maintained Honours with Distinction throughout high school as a full International Baccalaureate diploma candidate. In addition to his academic achievements, Alexander is an accomplished musician, was a member of the school wrestling team and volunteered in the community at St. Joseph's Auxiliary Hospital.

Alexander earned a President's Citation Scholastic Distinction Scholarship at the University of Alberta, where he is currently studying mathematics.

The prestigious Michael A. Strembitsky Award will also be presented tonight. Gold, silver and bronze medallions will be awarded to students who have achieved excellence in personal, social and academic endeavors, as well as demonstrating outstanding co-operation, innovation and leadership. Each high school in the District nominates one student for this award.
