Board of Trustees announces new superintendent of schools

At its regularly scheduled Board meeting tonight, the Edmonton Public Schools Board of Trustees announced that Mr. Edgar Schmidt would become the district's new superintendent of schools effective May 1, 2007.

"The Board of Trustees recognizes the important role played by the superintendent of schools," says Board Chair Bev Esslinger. "In addition to serving as the district's overall instructional leader, the superintendent is also responsible for fulfilling the priorities outlined by the Board. We believe the candidate we have selected will do an admirable job fulfilling these key requirements of the position."

The Board of Trustees began its search for a new superintendent in January 2007. Since that time, Mr. Bob Holt has served as acting superintendent. Mr. Holt will continue to serve in this capacity until Mr. Schmidt becomes superintendent.

"The Board appreciates Mr. Holt's diligent service to the district over the past few months," says Esslinger. "He will work with Mr. Schmidt to ensure a seamless transition in leadership."
