High school students promote literacy at elementary school

On Friday, March 23 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., 150 high school students from J. Percy Page and M. E. LaZerte schools will be visiting Eastwood School, 12023 - 81 Street, to celebrate literacy. The high school students have each adopted an Eastwood School student to visit and read with. In addition, each high school student has purchased a book to leave behind with their literacy buddy.

Ryan Au, a student at M.E. LaZerte School, initiated the project in response to an article he read on inner city schools looking for new ways to support children's literacy. Ryan met with Paul Gish, the principal of Eastwood School, and together they developed a strategy to encourage reading. The high school students responded by volunteering their time.
