Victoria School presents inaugural Arthur Hiller Student Film Festival
Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts is proud to present the inaugural Arthur Hiller Student Film Festival on Thursday, January 11 and Friday, January 12th. The festival named in honor of the Vic grad of 1942 will feature a showcase of independent films by students and grads of the school as well as a screening of Hiller's personal favorite film, The Americanization of Emily.
The screening of The Americanization of Emily will be hosted by local cultural critic, Gilbert Bouchard, who will set this 1964 anti war movie into a contemporary context and then lead discussion following the film. The seven selected student films will each receive a public and private adjudication by professional members of the local film community; screenwriter, actor and director, Mieko Ouchi, actor and director, Shawn Johnston and Marsh Murphy, Vice President of F.A.V.A. The festival will conclude on Saturday with a series of master classes for the honorees and current film students.
"There are loads of film festivals every year, but this one is unique in that it is a non-competitive, educational festival in which people who love films are invited to get together and talk about the making and viewing of them," says Steve Ashworth, video teacher at Victoria School. "It is great to be able to honor Arthur Hiller in this way, as he has been so generous over the years, inspiring and challenging our students to tell stories that make a difference."
Showtime is 7:00 p.m. both nights at Victoria School's Eva O. Howard Theatre (corner of 101 Street and Kingsway Avenue). Admission is free.
The school acknowledges the generous support of Metro Cinema, F.A.V.A. and the Victoria School Foundation for the Arts.
