Teachers recognized for excellence
Edmonton Public Schools is pleased to announce that eight district teachers have been honoured with 2006 Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching. The awards recognize the efforts of outstanding teachers in all disciplines throughout Canada who have developed innovative ways to teach. Prime Minister Harper announced the awards in Ottawa on Tuesday.
Receiving a Certificate of Excellence is Mary-Ellen Perley Waugh from McNally School. Ms Waugh teaches English language arts, world literature and creative writing.
The Prime Minister's Awards for Teaching Excellence also recognizes outstanding performance in a local category through Certificates of Achievement. David Case from McNally, Robert Dmytruk from Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts, Shane Grundy from Meyokumin School, Linette Smith from Eastglen and Christopher Heard, Joan Simpson and Frances Soanes from the Rites of Passage program at Amiskwaciy Academy all earned Certificates of Achievement.
"These award recipients exemplify the quality of teaching that is needed to motivate, challenge and inspire students to achieve to their potential," says Superintendent Lyall Thomson. "They stand as outstanding ambassadors of the teaching profession."
The Awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence (national) and Certificate of Achievement (regional) levels, carry cash prizes of $5000 and $1000 respectively. Financial awards are issued to the recipient's school to be spent at their discretion. Certificates of Excellence are awarded to the 15 top-ranked nominees, with the next 50 top-ranked nominees each receiving a Certificate of Achievement.
