Queen Elizabeth School celebrates the opening of its Living Classroom
On Tuesday, October 3 at 1:30 p.m., Queen Elizabeth School will officially open its Living Classroom. The Living Classroom, constructed in a previously unused portion of the school, is the end result of a project co-ordinated by school's Renaissance and student leadership groups.
The Living Classroom is available to all students and staff, but will provide the most benefit to students in the Individual Support Program. Students in this program have a variety of physical and mental disabilities. As part of their education in the core subjects such as math, science and social studies, program staff also encourage sensory stimulation. Stonework, water and plants will help to stimulate all five senses and teach students things like texture, temperature and smell recognition.
The wheelchair accessible classroom is filled with trees, flowers and shrubs hearty enough to withstand Alberta's climate. This will attract different types of birds and insects all students can observe as part of their studies.
This project was made possible through the support of the Rotary Club, sponsors, business partners and individual donations to the project. Some of these generous supporters will be on hand at the grand opening as well as Board Trustees and Superintendent Lyall Thomson.
