More of Edmonton Public Schools' students completing courses, completing school

At a media conference this morning, Mr. Lyall M. Thomson, Superintendent of Schools, announced the district's student achievement results for the 2005-2006 school year.

"We are moving in the right direction when it comes to the achievement of our students," says Superintendent Thomson. "Our results reflect the hard work of our students and staff, and the parents and community members who actively support student learning."

The district continues to see increases in the percentage of students completing high school. Since the province began reporting five-year high school completion rates in 1999-2000, the district has seen a 5.8 per cent increase in the percentage of students completing high school, rising to 70 per cent from 64.2 per cent.

Part of the district's work to improve its high school completion rate is to support students in successfully completing their high school courses. Since 2002-2003, the district has seen an increase in successful course completion for 10 of 12 core subject areas. In addition, a higher percentage of students are achieving credits in academic courses.

"It's important that we partner with other organizations and work with them to encourage students to stay in school, so they are able to receive the education they need to be productive employees over the long term," says Superintendent Thomson.

For seven of the 10 Grade 12 diploma exams, more district students achieved the standard of excellence than was true for the province in 2006.

For six of the 12 Provincial Achievement Tests, more district students achieved the standard of excellence in 2006 than in 2005. In addition, for most subjects, a greater percentage of district students met the acceptable standard and standard of excellence than was true for the province in 2006.

Complete achievement result reports were distributed during the media conference.
