Ribbon cutting and big BANG marks the opening of new Science alternative program at Elmwood School
The official opening of the new Science alternative program at Elmwood School (16325 - 83 Avenue) will take place on Thursday, September 14 at 9 a.m. in the school gymnasium.
Special guests at the opening include the Board Chair of Edmonton Public School Board, the Assistant Director of the Royal Provincial Museum and representatives from TELUS World of Science, the Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary and the University of Alberta.
In addition to the ribbon cutting, Edmonton Public Schools and the Royal Provincial Museum will sign a Memorandum of Understanding that formalizes the partnership between the two organizations to pursue common areas of interest. The partnership will enable the joint creation of innovative programs and enhanced learning environments. The ceremony will conclude with an "explosive" ending.
The Science alternative program is designed for students who are intensely curious, ask a lot of questions and are fascinated by the natural and technological world. The students will have the opportunity to work with scientists in many fields through different partnerships. Students are also encouraged to exhibit a commitment to the environment and will be involved in long term field studies at various nature sites.
The first alternative program was introduced in Edmonton Public Schools in 1974. Since then, as new and innovative programs have been added, there are approximately 30 programs for students and parents to choose from.
