EPSB encourages other boards to develop policies to support LGBTT students, staff and families

At last night's public meeting, the Edmonton Public School Board approved a motion to recommend to the Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA) that it assist other school boards in supporting the health, safety and learning needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirit (LGBTT) students, staff and families.

This recommendation is a follow-up to the Board's recent decision to create a new policy that specifically supports LGBTT students and staff. "The intent of our recommendation to the ASBA is to share best practices and policies that serve the LGBTT community with hopes that more LGBTT students, staff and families gain the supports they need in their schools," said Sarah Hoffman, Vice-Chair of the Edmonton Public School Board. "It's important for school boards to show leadership through effective policies that demonstrate a commitment to supporting all students, their families and staff."

The recommendation will go forward on April 29 to ASBA' Zone 2/3 meeting. If approved, it will then go to the ASBA's 2011 Fall General Meeting. Further information about this recommendation as well as other agenda items from last night's board meeting can be found in the Board of Trustees' section of Edmonton Public Schools' website (www.epsb.ca).
