Hillview students start the new year at City Hall School

Beginning Monday, January 10, the Grade 6 class from Hillview School will be attending City Hall School. The students will gain an understanding of municipal government through simulated City Council sessions, a visit to the Mayor's office and by interacting with city councillors. The theme for the week is social responsibility and to further explore this topic, the students will be visiting the Mustard Seed on Wednesday, January 12 at 10:30 a.m. They will be touring the inner city facility, making sandwiches paid for with money they contributed and bringing items like socks and backpacks for those in need. Trustee Leslie Cleary from Ward I will be joining the class on their trip to the Mustard Seed. She will also be sharing information with students about the role of Trustees and the School Board. Hillview School was one of 18 schools selected to participate in City Hall School for 2010/2011.

City Hall School is one of the Inquiring Minds sites in Edmonton. It is a week long, inquiry based, hands on learning experience for Grade 1 - 9 students. Citizenship, the environment and social responsibility are topics which are an integral part of City Hall School. Students not only have a chartered ETS bus transport them to and from City Hall, they also receive transit training and have opportunities to ride the LRT.
