Backpacks of Luck

Students, staff and parents at George H. Luck School in the south west have created their own version of Santa's Workshop putting together 800 Backpacks of Luck for homeless Edmontonians. On December 13 at 10 a.m., some of the students will be delivering the filled backpacks to Boyle Street Community Services (10116 105 Avenue). They will be joined by 60 children from the school choir who will be caroling for the clients of the drop in centre.

For four consecutive years, George H. Luck students have chosen to make a difference in the lives of people who are marginalized and impoverished. This holiday season, students learned to make fleece scarves to include in the packs - with the older students helping the younger students with the cutting of the patterns.

Each recipient will get two backpacks this year - filled with personal care items, warm clothing (toques, mitts and socks), a homemade scarf and Christmas card with a special message from a student and a coffee card.

Boyle Street Community Services Executive Director Julian Daly says, "This is a wonderful act of caring by the school, the students and their parents and it's a powerful sign that they are thinking about the needs of others who are less fortunate."

Media are invited to Boyle Street Community Services on December 13, where there will be an opportunity to meet the children and to talk to some of the community members who will benefit from receiving the backpacks.
