Official Opening of Johnny Bright School

The official opening of Johnny Bright School will take place on Wednesday, September 15 at 7 p.m. (1331 Rutherford Road SW). Attending the ceremony will be Don Fleming, Board Chair; Catherine Ripley, Board Vice-Chair; Bev Esslinger, Sue Huff and George Rice, Trustees from the Edmonton Public School Board; Dave Hancock, Minister of Education; Ray Danyluk, Minister of Infrastructure; Bryan Anderson, City Councillor; and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools. The one hour ceremony will conclude with an official ribbon cutting ceremony, refreshments and tours of the school.

"The Board is pleased that our strong advocacy for new schools has paid off and that now, through our combined efforts with the Provincial Government, this important new community resource has been provided to serve the students and the residents of southwest Edmonton," says Chair Fleming.

Johnny Bright is an ASAP school - owned, administered and operated by Edmonton Public Schools. The school has been built to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification, an independent rating system used to measure environmental efficiency. LEED Silver buildings are more energy efficient, cost less to operate, and provide a healthier work environment through improved air quality and use of natural light.

The school is named after Johnny Bright (1930 - 1983), a highly respected athlete and educator who had a distinguished career in the Canadian Football League and in Edmonton Public Schools.
