Good Things Are Happening

What: BEIJING OPERA TO DAZZLE STUDENTS
The Confucius Institute in Edmonton and the Edmonton Beijing Opera Association is presenting a free workshop on Beijing Opera to 1000 junior high and high school students. This is a rare opportunity for students to learn about this remarkable ancient Chinese Art from the Mei Lanfang Beijing Opera Troupe, leading opera performers in the world. The troupe was established in 1922 by the Beijing Opera legend Mei Lanfang, who was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to the rest of the world. The performers will showcase the five components of Beijing Opera; singing, recitation, acrobatic fighting, gestures and dancing.

Developed more than 200 years ago, Beijing Opera is considered 'China's cultural treasure,' but is rarely performed in other countries. There are four main roles in Beijing Opera which include male, female, clown and painted face. There are also 11 colours of makeup, each signifying a different type of character. Red signifies loyalty, yellow is cruel, grey is greedy, while blue means brave.
