DISTRICT ART AWARD EXHIBIT

Thirty Grade 12 art portfolio submissions as well as the jury-selected Best of Each Portfolio, are on display at the Centre for Education. The portfolios show the breadth of the student's inspirations which ranged from explorations of their emotions to their passion for nature and humanity.

Lee Bale, art educator and local fabric artist and Carla Bedford, an art teacher at Steele Heights School formed the jury that selected 28 pieces from the initial 30 portfolios (almost 200 pieces of art) to be shown at the 15th Annual Edmonton Public Schools Award Exhibition during The Works Art & Design Festival in downtown Edmonton.

Harry Ainlay student Kimberly Wu was chosen as the overall Art Award winner. The jurors noted that Kimberly has found her artistic voice, adding to their adjudication, "We are moved by your mastery of image and ideas at such a young age." Her work will be displayed in the Centre for Education once The Works Festival has come to a close. When asked what inspires her, Kimberly said, "From a young age, my mom always encouraged me to find the creative in the ugly…to turn something not so cool into something that is cool. I enjoy altering objects and expressing my art in all forms of media... creating my own signature, my own voice."

In addition, three students were awarded Honourable Mentions for their work: Maren Elliott from Harry Ainlay, Mia Riley from W.P. Wagner and Arthur Hobden from Jasper Place.
