Good Things Are Happening
EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS GET THEIR 'GREEN' ON!

April is Earth Month and Thursday, April 22 is International Earth Day, the largest, most celebrated environmental event worldwide. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Earth Day. Many Edmonton Public School students will be involved in activities recognizing Earth Month and Earth Day - everything ranging from Earth Day assemblies, waste reduction projects, planting trees and gardens - to pitch-in and clean-up drives

Here is a listing of some of the events taking place around the District:

On Thursday, April 22, all district schools and departments have been asked to participate in the second annual Westglen "Lights Out" Challenge. Staff and students are being asked to turn off as many lights and electrical devices as is safe and practical for at least one hour. This event is intended to bring awareness of the District's impact on the environment and bring about actions to help reduce it. Further information: Will Deys, Principal - Energy & Environmental Management, 780-429-8513 On Thursday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m., students and teachers at McArthur School will put litter in its place on Earth Day as they participate in Capital City Clean Up's "Schoolyard Cleanup."

On Thursday, April 22 and Friday, April 23, from 8 to 9 a.m. and again during the lunch hour, the M.E. LaZerte Green Team will be running its 2nd annual Electronic Waste Collection in the atrium. Students have been encouraged to bring in both small and large electronics which will be taken to the Edmonton eco-station.

On Thursday, April 22, from 1 to 2 p.m., Killarney Junior High School is participating in a school yard and community clean-up. All students, staff and invited guests will be out picking up trash in the Killarney neighbourhood. During this time the school will also be "powered down", turning off all electrical devices for a full hour while participating in the clean-up.

At noon on Friday, April 23, student designers at Ross Sheppard School will be displaying their Project Runway "Green" clothing. The garb is made from recycled or recyclable materials, such as newspapers and compostable garbage bags. The idea stemmed from the student-led Project Green team who thought it would be cool way to explore sustainable fashion.

On Friday, April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Grade 3 students at Brightview School will be holding an Energy Carnival. The Science Club will be setting up hands-on stations including wind, water, solar and kinetic energy through which the entire school will rotate.
