STEELE HEIGHTS SCHOOL BATTLES FOR CO2 CAR SUPREMACY
On Friday, March 19, Steele Heights School will have the opportunity to defend their championship CO2 car title when 70 junior high school students from across the city converge to the New Cap Radio stage in West Edmonton Mall for the second annual CO2 powered drag races.
The tradition of building CO2 cars in the Technical Design courses at Steele Heights is something the students look forward to every year. This year is especially significant as the school is defending their championship from last year, in which they placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the city.
The CO2 cars are always a popular unit in Technical Design classes. Students use computers to research and design their cars and then demonstrate their power and hand tool skills to execute the task. It allows the strengths of each student to surface, whether it is scientific problem solving, mathematical analysis, the steady concentration of a budding craftsperson, or the artistic eye that optimizes the aesthetic value of each car.
Steele Heights School teacher Harold Semenuk, who led the school to victory last year, adds, "Our goal is that each student succeeds in turning their visionary form into a real substance. The races at West Edmonton Mall are simply a friendly competition where the synthesis of their labour is finally tested. Each split second race is the culmination of a personally satisfying journey for each student - that's the real victory."
The Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with Edmonton Public Schools and the Edmonton Catholic School District co-host the CO2 car showdown in celebration of National Engineering & Geosciences Month.
Media are welcome to attend. The races begin at 5 p.m. while the award presentation and wrap-up begin at 8 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the school with the fastest Muscle Car and the fastest Sprint Car.
