Good Things Are Happening
LITERACY DAY AT BELMONT SCHOOL

On Monday, February 22, Belmont School is hosting its 2nd annual Literacy Day. This year students from Horse Hill School will also be taking part. The keynote speaker, and special guest for the day, is author and artist Barbara Reid. Ms. Reid has won numerous literary awards and her books have been published in Canada, The USA, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Holland, Finland, Norway, China, Germany and Thailand.

The aim of Literacy Day is to give the students a feel of a real conference. They will all be divided into multi-grade teams, each named after one of Barbara Reid's books. As teams they will then meet to get to know each other and design a team banner.

The teams will move through a variety of literacy stations that focus on reading, writing, math, scrapbooking and science skills. The sessions include: Mystery Messages; Scrapbooking; Preparing a Snack (reading directions); Glyphs - (math literacy); Olympics In the Gym (physical education); and Literacy Read Across Canada (science/social studies research).

In addition to daily reading, each Belmont School student is engaged in learning by not only with books, but using SmartBoards, computers and ever evolving technologies. The school is also focused on using best teaching practices in reading instruction to ensure students are developing a range of literacy strategies which allows them to read a variety of print and in a variety of formats.
