Good Things Are Happening
EDMONTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS LAUNCHES SKILL CENTRE

Assisting youth in making an informed decision about their future

On January 28, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Edmonton Public Schools will officially launch the Skill Centre in Amiskwaciy Academy (101 Airport Road).

The Skill Centre will enable students from district high schools to participate in aviation maintenance, culinary, health care or manufacturing/pre-engineering programs. These programs will equip students with the skills, attitudes and abilities needed to successfully transition into post-secondary education and the world of work.

Edmonton Public Schools and NAIT collaborated to develop the Skill Centre, which was realized through an Innovation Grant from the Government of Alberta. This initiative brings together courses from high school with post-secondary programs in career and technical education areas to improve student achievement.

In addition to students, parents and partners, the following dignitaries will be in attendance: MP Laurie Hawn, MLA Doug Elniski, MLA Naresh Bhardwaj, MLA and Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Education Janice Sarich, Mayor Stephen Mandel, Edmonton Public Schools Board Chair Don Fleming and Trustees Dave Colburn, Bev Esslinger, Catherine Ripley and Ken Shipka.

The program begins at 4:50 p.m. and will include brief presentations, a tour of the four program areas and a reception. An official Blessing of the Skill Centre will be conducted as part of the program by two Elders from Amiskwaciy Academy. Media are invited to attend, but are reminded that filming may not take place during the Blessing.
