CONFUCIUS INSTITUTE OFFICIALLY OPENS LARGEST CHINESE LIBRARY IN ALBERTA

On Monday, January 25 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. the Confucius Institute in Edmonton (CIE) will officially open the Confucius Institute Library. The Library contains 24,000 volumes in print and electronic form, which cover a range of topics including language learning, history, economics, literature, geography and tourism. The library was donated to the CIE by the Chinese Government.

The opening will be attended by the Executive Director General of the Hanban Ministry in Beijing and the Minister of Education of Shandong Province. The ceremony will include cultural performances via video conference from Beijing and Jinan. Don Fleming, Board Chair, Edmonton Public Schools and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools will also be in attendance.

The Institute, a partnership formed in May 2008 between China and Edmonton Public Schools, is very active in supporting the learning of Chinese language and cultural activities in Edmonton schools. The Institute is also instrumental in linking the Edmonton region with business and cultural interests in China. The CIE is also playing a role with the local World Trade Centre and Chamber of Commerce, in helping to improve educational and economic connections between Edmonton and China.

The Confucius Institute and its Library are located in the former site of Woodcroft School.
