Good Things Are Happening
BACKPACKS OF LUCK

Students, staff and parents at George H. Luck School in the south west have been busy filling 425 Backpacks of Luck for homeless Edmontonians. On December 16 at 9:45 a.m., the students will be delivering the filled backpacks to Boyle Street Community Services (10116 105 Avenue). They will be accompanied by 50 children from the school choir who will be performing songs of the season for the clients of the drop in centre.

This is the third year George H. Luck students have chosen to make a difference in the lives of people who are marginalized and impoverished. As a result, George H. Luck School was recognized this fall as the top Outreach School in Canada by Today's Parent Magazine. The school's community spirit continues on again this year in hopes of making the world a better place.

This year the backpacks come in a rainbow of colours - choices made by each class of students at the school. Each backpack will be filled with personal care items, warm clothing (toques, mitts and socks), a homemade Christmas card with a special message from a student and a coffee card.

Boyle Street Community Services Executive Director Julian Daly says, "Young people are looking for ways to make a difference. Backpacks of Luck is a tangible and meaningful way to signal the desire of young people to help others who do not have a home. The joint work of students, parents and staff at George H. Luck School is a powerful sign that they are thinking about the needs of the community."

Media are invited to Boyle Street Community Services on December 16, where there will be an opportunity to meet the children and to talk to some of the community members who will benefit from receiving the backpacks.
