OFFICIAL OPENING OF LILLIAN OSBORNE HIGH SCHOOL

The official opening of Lillian Osborne High School will take place on Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m. (2019 Leger Road NW). Attending the ceremony will be Dave Hancock, Minister of Education and MLA for Edmonton-Whitemud; Councillor Bryan Anderson; Board Chair Don Fleming; Trustees Bev Esslinger, Ken Gibson, George Rice and Catherine Ripley from the Edmonton Public School Board, and Edgar Schmidt, Superintendent of Schools. The one hour ceremony will conclude with a ribbon cutting and tours of the school.

"Lillian Osborne High School is just the latest example of our Board's ongoing commitment to provide outstanding learning opportunities for district students," says Board Chair Don Fleming.

Construction on the building started in August 2007 and was completed on September 2, 2009 when 350 Grade 10 students moved into the new facility. The 8,988 square meter wireless building was designed by Cohos Evamy Integrated Design, cost $27 million to construct and has a capacity for 1,000 students. Lillian Osborne High School was designed to achieve the silver standing in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.

The school is named after Lillian Mary Osborne (1869 - 1929), the public school district's first female teacher and one of Alberta's pioneering educators. In 1983, Lillian M. Osborne was honoured by the City of Edmonton for her contributions in education by receiving an Historical Board Recognition Award.
