Dr. Don Massey, a native Edmontonian, attended King Edward Park, Rutherford, King Edward and Strathcona schools, followed by undergraduate work at the University of Alberta and graduate studies at the University of Kansas. He was a professor in the Elementary Education Department at the University of Alberta, involved in research that included examining text book images and their effect on student thinking.

Dr. Massey is also a former Edmonton Public Schools’ Trustee. He was first elected in 1977, served until 1989, and was the Board Chair for four years. As a Trustee, he worked tirelessly to reduce extreme class size ranges, developed new programs for special needs students, increased the number of important decisions made at the local school level and provided support for women seeking leadership positions. In addition, Dr. Massey served as a Liberal MLA for Edmonton-Millwoods from 1993 until 2004, where he undertook the role as Education critic for a period of time. Dr. Massey’s lifelong association with education in the city and province is clearly evident, as is the significant impact he has had on generations of students.
