Elizabeth Finch School - The Palisades, 13815 160 Avenue NW. Click here to visit the school website.

Elizabeth Finch or Betty, as she was affectionately known, dedicated her efforts to shaping the bright futures of not only our students, but of our District as well. Betty held a number of positions, all of which served to improve services to students and families impacted by learning disabilities. She began her career as a reading specialist, subsequently moving into supervisory roles. She played an integral role in establishing the Strategies program within Edmonton Public Schools. This highly successful program was designed to serve students who demonstrated specific weakness in literacy development.

After Betty retired from the District, the Academy at King Edward program was developed as an extension of the Strategies programming. In addition, Betty was one of the driving forces in the creation of the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta. She contributed countless hours traveling throughout the province giving sessions to raise awareness about learning disabilities. In 1987, The Learning Disability Association of Edmonton established a scholarship in her name, which is awarded annually to a student with learning disabilities. She was also a member of the University of Alberta Senate and in 1978 received an Alberta Achievement Award in Education. Betty remained active in her retirement until her passing in 2002. It is evident that Betty had a lifelong association with education in the city and province, as well as a significant impact on the students she served.
