SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ENDS TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS

After reviewing the latest information regarding the H1N1 Influenza outbreak, Superintendent of Schools Edgar Schmidt has suspended all restrictions on staff and student travel.

Effective May 7, 2009, the District will allow students and staff to resume air travel within Canada as well as all international field trips and district business trips.

"I have been reviewing the global and local information on a daily basis and based on the latest data will follow the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health regarding travel," said Schmidt. "I feel the situation in Canada and around the world has stabilized. The situation was far more uncertain on April 28, when I initially implemented the travel restrictions."

"The Board of Trustees supports the Superintendent's decision," says Board Chair Bev Esslinger. "We will continue to be in ongoing communication with the Superintendent, who will keep us apprised of new developments that might affect student and staff travel."

Six trips were cancelled as a result of the travel restrictions. Ten more trips that were on hold will proceed, now that the travel ban has been lifted. The District is examining the costs involved in the cancelled trips as part of its ongoing review process.
