ALBERTA'S YOUTH VOLUNTEER FOR EDMONTON!

On Tuesday, March 17, Jasper Place School is hosting a one-day student leadership conference organized by Alberta's Youth VOLUNTEER! Society. Malika and Rabia Ladha are the two student organizers from Jasper Place.

This full-day conference brings together student leaders from district high schools, their teacher advisors and members of the Board of Trustees. Students will have an opportunity to discuss some of the issues they face at their schools with Trustees.

Next the conversations will focus on global issues, specifically the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDG)*. The ultimate goal of the conference is to link students and their schools to local volunteer organizations that fulfill one or more of the MDG. The students are then challenged to create school-based projects in service of these community agencies. These projects will be announced on April 23 and 24 - Global Youth Service Day.

*The Millennium Development Goals are eight goals that 189 United Nations member states have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2015. They are:

  1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  2. Achieve universal primary education
  3. Promote gender equality and empower women
  4. Reduce child mortality
  5. Improve maternal health
  6. Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
  7. Ensure environmental sustainability
  8. Develop a global partnership for development

Alberta's Youth VOLUNTEER Society is a provincial youth-led organization that supports, encourages and enhances youth volunteerism across Alberta.
